Identification of a candidate dwarfing gene in Pallas, the first commercial barley cultivar generated through mutational breeding

Many induced mutants are available in barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.). One of the largest groups is Erectoides ert ) mutants, which characterized by a compact and upright spike shortened culm. isolated mutant, ert-k.32 , generated X-ray treatment registered 1958 under named “Pallas”, was first ever mutant to be released on market. Its value improved culm strength enhanced lodging resistance. In this study, we aimed identify casual gene whole genome sequencing allelic ert-k mutants. The suggested Ert-k candidate gene, HORVU.MOREX.r3.6HG0574880, located centromeric region chromosome 6H. product an alpha/beta hydrolase with catalytic triad active site composed Ser-167, His-261 Asp-232. comparison proteins derived from Arabidopsis genome, ErtK most similar thioesterase de-S-acylation activity. This suggests that catalyzes post-translational modifications removing fatty acids covalently attached cysteine residues target involved regulation plant architecture important commercial traits such as stability
